North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken a significant step towards empowering women in agriculture with the launch of the Women in Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD) Structure in Klerksdorp on November 8.
The department said initiative aims to increase women’s representation and participation in the sector, fostering gender equity and leadership.
WARD will provide women with access to training, skills development, and resources to overcome challenges in accessing land, finance, and markets.
The structure will also focus on strengthening networks for women in agriculture, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing, empower women to take up leadership roles in agricultural initiatives, enhance food security, rural development and economic empowerment for women and recognize and value women’s contributions to sustainable development plans.
Speaking during the unveiling of this structure, the Head of Department Thupi Mokhatla emphasised that empowering women, particularly in rural areas, will accelerate community- led development projects focused on agricultural innovation, sustainable livelihoods, and food security.
The elected Chairperson of this structure, Neo Mohlamme, a farmer herself, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating it will ensure women are not only beneficiaries but also leaders in transforming the sector towards a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural future
The launch aligns with the department’s priorities and demonstrates their commitment to harnessing the full potential of women in agriculture and rural development.
