African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) wishes to congratulate DA leader John Steenhuisen on his appointment as Minister of Agriculture in the 7th (Seventh) administration.
His appointment comes at a time when the sector recently welcomed the Agricultural and Agro Processing Master Plan (AAMP).
AFASA sees the implementation of the AAMP as a critical intervention in a sector that still faces serious challenges when it comes to transformation and inclusive growth.
“It is AFASA’s strong view that the attainment of the objectives articulated in the AAMP and mitigating risks that threaten the growth of the sector, climate change being the main one, require unity and concerted effort. We also call upon all role players in the sector, irrespective of race and creed to work together in ensuring that the vision of the AAMP becomes a reality, “AFASA President, AJ Mthembu remarked.
AFASA hopes that with the Deputy Minister Capa on board, we anticipate that the implementation of this plan will gather the required momentum.
“We hope that the split between the functions of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, will not undermine the individual contribution these Departments need to make towards growing this important sector. The implementation of the AAMP requires a consolidated and integrated approach by all Departments and stakeholders for greater impact, government cannot do it alone,” says Mthembu.
AFASA said its priority as an organisation, is to strengthen value proposition, with the government being the key partner.
“The importance of joint effort by all relevant organisations and stakeholders, black and white, in contributing towards inclusive growth of the agricultural sector in South Africa, cannot be overemphasized.
“Our warm welcome to the leaders, Minister Steenhuisen, Deputy Minister Capa, Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mzwanele Nyhontso and Deputy Minister Stanley Mathabatha to the sector.
“AFASA wishes you well as you embark on a journey of taking the agricultural sector of our country to new heights,” concludes Mthembu.
