Addressing the impact of El Niño crisis in Southern Africa

The El Niño phenomenon continues to wreak havoc on Southern Africa, posing significant challenges to food security, livelihoods, and the overall well-being of communities in the region.

 In response to this pressing crisis, the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), CARE Southern Africa, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) are convening a one-day event on April 22, aimed at addressing the multifaceted impacts of El Niño and charting a course towards sustainable solutions.

The event will take place from 2pm to 5pm at the Agricultural Research Council in Hatfield.

Dr Tshilidzi Madzivhandila, CEO and Head of Mission for Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) said the event represents a pivotal opportunity to mobilize collective action and catalyze meaningful change in response to the El Niño crisis. By leveraging research, policy advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, the event aims to empower communities and decision-makers to executively navigate the challenges posed by El Niño and build a more resilient future for Southern Africa.

Madzivhandila added that the event aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including government representatives, regional organizations, diplomatic missions, media, and civil society, towards a coordinated and holistic approach to addressing the El Niño crisis.

Also, to disseminate findings from a comprehensive food system study, highlighting the specific challenges and opportunities presented by the El Niño crisis in Zambia.

Furthermore the event will launch a policy advisory note on El Niño, providing actionable recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to enhance preparedness, response, and adaptation exhort.

Madzivhandila  said expected outcomes are that there’ll be Increased awareness and understanding of the complex dynamics of the El Niño  crisis in Southern Africa, strengthened partnerships and collaboration across sectors and disciplines to  foster innovative solutions and approaches to address the challenges posed by the  El Niño phenomenon and enhanced capacity among policymakers and stakeholders to develop evidence based strategies and policies for mitigating El Niño’s impacts and building resilience  in the region.
