High Court rules that lives sheep can be exported
The Grahamstown High Court has granted the first and second respondents Al Mawashi and Livestock Transport and Trading Company, to transport 56 000 sheep from Castledale Feedlot to the Al Mawashi vessel.
The sheep are destined for the Middle East with the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development (DARLLD) ordered to monitor the removal of the sheep from the feedlot to the vessel berthed in East London port.
However, the High Court said such transportation of sheep should follow prescripts of the OIE Chapter 7, which provides basic guidelines for animal welfare and handling while on vessel.
The applicant NSCPA is yet to respond to the judgement.
